“That discussion helped us recognize that our busy schedules were affecting not just our time together but also our emotional connection.
”
This story has been edited for length and clarity.
When we were both working 9–5 jobs, we realized how consumed we had become by our daily routines. We would leave home very early and return late, often still dealing with unfinished tasks or simply feeling exhausted. Over time, this pattern created a cycle of emotional distance and withdrawal between us.
The Turning Point
We had an honest and intentional conversation where we reflected on what had been happening and acknowledged how distant we had become. That discussion helped us recognize that our busy schedules were affecting not just our time together but also our emotional connection. We agreed that if we wanted things to improve, we needed to be deliberate about creating healthier boundaries and better communication.
As a result, we put practical structures in place to strengthen our bond. For example, we decided to keep our phones away during meals so we could be fully present with each other. We also agreed not to bring unfinished work home unless it was necessary and urgent. In addition, we made a conscious effort to check in with each other daily and set aside quality time, even if brief, to reconnect. These changes gradually improved our communication, restored intimacy, and helped us feel more connected again.
Where We Are Now
At this point, we are growing, learning, and intentionally choosing each other every single day. We’ve come to understand that in marriage, certain “legitimate demands” such as parenting, career pressures, or even ministry commitments can gradually create distance between couples. However, regardless of the season, partners need to be deliberate about nurturing their connection and strengthening communication to keep the relationship healthy and aligned.
